Current Project

Hi everyone!

Still tracking down a scanner for my last watercolor, but in the mean time, I'm slowly but surely getting back into digital.

Ekernit, in progress
So I've been working on this thing.  Still resolving issues with composition, contrast, and the like... I haven't quite figured out a way to draw in the viewer properly.  Considering some mist, or smoke or something.  Gotta get that depth somehow!

And while I figure out how to properly scan my latest watercolor, I'm also doing some thumbnails.

I'm trying to branch out (pun not intended) and maybe escape the ocean for a little while.

Ganesha Sitting Serenely
Digital

Here's a piece I finished recently.  It was a challenge to work with such saturated color–so much of my work has been dark lately.
I'm trying to get back into digital painting, it's been a while.

Update!

I've been neglecting this blog for a while, and here is a detailed list of things I did while I was away:

  1. Graduated (BFA Illustration, Magna Cum Laude)
  2. Uploaded my portfolio to this blog!  On the side over there I now have pages for my concept art, illustration, and sketches.  Please do click through and have a look!
Art college was a lot of fun, I highly recommend it.  They even give you this nifty piece of paper at the end that says you've properly learned how to see.  Neat!

Crazy Eel's Cave

In which Lorca visits Crazy-the-Eel.
Original Watercolor
Final Painting

I'm a little tired of all these rocks I end up having to paint, but this piece was pretty rewarding.  My favorite thing ever is dramatic lighting, which made for a really fun process.

Crazy's character was inspired by the eels in the dark depths of the ocean that stare straight up all day, waiting for a scrap of food.  It seemed appropriate for a sort of weird-old-hermit character.  Crazy hears secrets of the ocean, and his beard-anglerfish translates his mindless rabble into sound, wise advice.

Gatorshark Trench

I'm trying to get in the habit of doing thumbnails more often, especially for my environments.  It really helps one loosen up, and becoming faster with digital is a goal I'm constantly working toward.
Here are three for my first thesis piece of 2012:

And the final, Gatorshark Trench:

This piece was a huge learning experience that I'm not sure I enjoyed, but it was necessary to set up for the next piece.

Loosely titled Anglergatorshark, this is a creature concept inspired from a great white shark, an alligator, and a very interesting dragonfish(?).

Check him out:
I was so taken with his unique jaw structure; this aspect fueled much of my creature's design.

"Millions of years ago, the first skywhale fell to the sea and drowned, her remains giving life to the barren seafloor."

This is an environment concept for my Senior Thesis.  My intention was to build a world centered on light and bioluminescence under the ocean.  This particular space was designed after the shape of an abstracted humpback whale's skull.

Hello, internet!

Salutations!

I will be using this blog as a space for my artistic endeavors, specifically my illustrative work.

My art is focused in concept art and children's book illustration.  Much of my work revolves around the ethereal, fantastic, and mysterious.
